BioGarde is the product of an R&D program by Fashion Uniforms Limited, a leading New Zealand supplier and manufacturer of uniforms and workwear serving a range of markets.
What is BioGarde?
BioGarde is a treatment that gives textiles antimicrobial properties. Fabric that is treated with BioGarde is effective against Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli when they come into contact with it and prevent them from breeding and spreading to other surfaces.
How does BioGarde work?
BioGarde uses silver which has well-documented natural antimicrobial properties. Silver ions that are embedded into the fabric transmit natural electrical charges that attack the microbes and disrupt cell function which inhibits them. See How It Works page.
How do you know BioGarde is effective against coronavirus?
In October 2020, BioGarde was tested by an independent lab in accordance with procedures and methods of ISO 18184:2019, which is the standard test method for determining the antiviral activity of textile products against defined virus strains. The independent lab test confirms that after 2 hours, BioGarde is effective against coronavirus — the fabric they tested had been washed 100 times.
What were the exact results from your testing?
The coronavirus virus testing on BioGarde textiles concluded that 2 hours after contact, the feline coronavirus had reduced by 99.46%. Separate testing on BioGarde textiles has also shown Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus had both reduced by 99.99% after 18-24 hours (the standard timing of the JIS L 1902:2008 test method).
Did they use actual coronavirus to test?
The ISO18184:2019 test method is used to determine the antiviral activity of the textile product against specified viruses. The test method is conducted by accredited laboratories by using Feline Coronavirus as the virus test specimen. Both Feline Coronavirus and SARS-CoV2 belong to the virus family Coronaviridae. The members of the family Coronaviridae are enveloped and have a positive sense RNA genome. Coronaviruses have a distinct morphology with an outer ‘corona’ of embedded envelope spikes. These viruses cause a broad spectrum of animal and human diseases. There are currently no ISO accredited antiviral tests based on the SARS-CoV2 virus available for textile products.
Has any testing been undertaken regarding the effectiveness of the treatment against COVID-19?
COVID-19 is the name of the disease caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2. While it is neither a medicine nor a vaccine so should in no way claim efficacy against the disease, BioGarde-treated fabric has been tested as effective against the FCoV virus. Tests conducted by an independent laboratory showed that treated fabric achieved 99.46% reduction of the virus after 2 hours.
Can I see the lab results on this testing?
We have to remove out some of the key contact details due to commercial confidentiality but we can supply the lab results to current clients and qualified prospect clients on request, at our discretion.
Is BioGarde expensive?
BioGarde uniforms cost marginally more but they provide excellent ROI: uniforms made with BioGarde last longer than untreated uniforms because laundering is less harsh and BioGarde inhibits the bacteria that harbours in fabric and causes it to degenerate. Also, laundering BioGarde uniforms costs considerably less in terms of energy and water consumption because they do not require harsh chemicals or high temperatures to ensure sanitization. They can be safely washed at home at 30˚C.
Within the healthcare sector, BioGarde also saves valuable resources by helping to combat cross-contamination and HAIs (hospital acquired infections).
Do BioGarde fabrics feel different to normal fabrics?
Only in that they wear better and stay fresher for longer. The look and feel of the fabric is the same but the uniforms will keep that just-laundered freshness until their next wash. Wearing BioGarde uniforms also gives peace of mind: you know that, for its lifetime, the uniform will protect you from microbes.
How do you wash BioGarde treated fabrics?
A single wash at 30˚C is sufficient to ensure cleanliness and disinfection. There is no need for high temperatures, bleach or harsh chemicals. Non-treated fabrics are safe to be washed with BioGarde fabrics. BioGarde does not transfer onto other clothing and can be safely laundered at home with other items.
Is BioGarde safe for the environment?
Yes. BioGarde is durably bonded and so does not leak into wastewater. BioGarde is also ecologically sustainable: BioGarde fabrics last longer than untreated fabrics and their laundering/disinfection uses significantly less energy and water. BioGarde avoids the need for toxic chemicals to disinfect fabric.
Is BioGarde a nanotechnology?
No. BioGarde is neither produced by nanotechnology nor does the particle size of BioGarde fit into the nano-range. An independent Institute has certified that BioGarde is not a nanosilver-based product. Particle size and partition of BioGarde has been measured by “Generic Latex Measurement”. The result confirmed clearly that the particle size of BioGarde is out of the nano-range.
